Upgrading wastewater treatment plants for nutrient removal is one of Maryland’s top environmental priorities. This two-day course addresses the implications of upgrading from Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) to Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR). Training sessions will review the basics of nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal first. Various process configurations will be discussed to accomplish the required levels of nutrient removal. Process control testing and adjustments will also be examined to optimize ENR plant performance. In addition, there will be two field exercises at BNR facilities that are in the process of upgrading to ENR facilities. The facilities have utilized different process configurations to accomplish the same level of treatment. Following the field exercises, classroom discussions will focus on the O&M similarities and differences between the two facilities.
