Maryland's Mining Safety Talk

STOP the Fatalities!

MSHA is launching a national campaign to stop the recent upward trend in metal and nonmetal fatalities.  The attached letter and enclosure are being mailed to all 16000 MNM mine operators and contractors this week.

Officially, MSHA will launch this initiative Monday, April 16th.  W e are asking that you promote our STOP the Fatalities campaign at meetings, conferences, and though your valuable communications channels.  You may use the attached letter and talking points when you discuss this initiative with your mining community.  Additional information related to this important initiative is on MSHA’s homepage.  We encourage you and your staff to learn more about this campaign and then get the word out for miners and contractors to recognize hazards and eliminate them to create a safer workplace.

It will take all of us working together to make this campaign successful, not just in the short term when we will be out in the field talking to miners and contractors, getting their attention to look around their workplace and recognize any hazards that may cause an accident at their mining operation, but in the long-term, to keep the STOP the Fatalities messages in the minds of the mine operators, miners and contractors.  If the campaign message make them more aware of hazards and continue to always look for any hazards, if they take steps to correct the hazards, then this will truly be a successful campaign.  It will make a difference.
